Alex Cahana lived many lives, adopting the mantra “be bold, be brief, and be gone.” He’s a military man, systems pragmatist and VC partner who focuses his energy on developing creative solutions in healthcare using blockchain.
Launching CryptoOracle Health, Cahana works with startups on developing and implementing blockchain-based solutions. With a co-working space called CryptoCommons located in Midtown Manhattan, Alice Hlidkova and Lucas “Lucce” Cervigni had the perfect studio layout to conveniently sit down with Dr. Cahana for an interview on life principles, experiences, and aspirations for the blockchain industry.
“In the first life, I was a soldier,” he says, adopting the strong backbone for team dynamics. “None of us is as good as all of us,” he believes, as this principle is “central in our DNA,” adds Cahana, sharing a similar sentiment with fellow soldiers, who find their place in the industry — the systems guys. And believe him when he says, “The industry is growing.”
In the second life, as a pain management architect and Professor, Cahana laid out his deeply vested interests in patient-reported outcomes and the digital integration of the systems that managed workflows. “I call this, “digiceutical”, best defined here as the engagement of patients to report their outcomes, wholesomely.
Now, in his current position Dr. Cahana consults startups, enterprises, the Military and Veteran Health care systems and Governments on disruptive technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, Genomics and in particular Distributed Ledger Technology.
For all his efforts, Cahana received the University of Washington Presidential Medal of Honor, an award given to faculty for leadership and social contribution. On his achievement, he says, “I am a storyteller…and the recognition is not for yourself,” but to portray strong virtues of citizenship and camaraderie.
Cahana jokes about his “love story with crypto”. He believes that through one’s efforts being fearless and selfless, the industry draws the creative minds necessary to help and change current industries like healthcare, being more humane, fair and equitable.
We are in the period, of “embracing technology to improve the quality of care,” so that the bulk of illnesses, mental health, depression, anxiety, but also diabetes, obesity and heart disease can be eliminated. Cahana advocates for a healthier way of being where we transform ourselves from “health service consumers to health producers.”
Using a token-based economic model, we can also make health and wealth production accessible to all. “Blockchain can be used to create that wealth,” he says, and like the sherpa guiding the group, he helps young entrepreneurs climb their peaks and descend safely into the valley of success.
Concluding his views on health, he adds: “When you take the ‘i’ out of ‘illness,’ and replace it with ‘we’- you get wellness.” It is all about the ‘we’, because ‘none of us is as good as all of us’.
To conclude, the social is always more important than the technological. it’s all about community building.
